How to Compare Spring Yard Cleanup Quotes
One spring cleanup quote covers leaves on the lawn. Another includes the garden beds and takes the debris away. Write down the areas and the finish you want before comparing their totals.

The short answer
Give each provider the same list of yard areas, debris and disposal needs. Ask what is included, what is optional, and whether the total is fixed or based on crew time. Price lawn treatments and new materials separately unless you want them included in the cleanup.
Separate the cleanup from extra work
His Workmanship’s Minneapolis page describes raking for spring or fall cleanup alongside separately described services such as weeding, trimming and mulching. Ask which tasks are included in the written price.
For hourly cleanup, ask whether the rate is for the crew or for each worker. Two workers on site for two hours is two crew-hours or four worker-hours. Ask for the expected labor total, whether loading or disposal trips are billed as time, and when the crew would check with you before exceeding the estimate.
Describe large limbs, construction waste or heavy piles separately rather than assuming they fit a basic yard cleanup.
| Part of the request | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Lawn and paved areas | Leaves, small sticks and winter debris; identify each area |
| Garden beds | Which beds, which debris, and plants or areas to leave alone |
| Disposal | Bagged and left in an agreed spot, or hauled away with disposal charges included |
| Optional work | Mowing, pruning, fresh mulch and other treatments, priced separately |
| Timing | Target window and what happens if conditions delay the visit |
Does the lawn need the treatment in the package?
A spring cleanup is not automatically a reason to buy aeration or dethatching. University of Minnesota Extension’s April 2024 spring-task guide recommends late August through early October for those tasks. Ask the provider why a proposed treatment is appropriate for your lawn and timing.
If debris will stay for collection, check your own city or hauler’s current preparation rules and pickup dates before choosing that option. Do not assume every Twin Cities address has the same service.
Worked example: separate cleanup from lawn treatments
Illustrative scope example, not a real quote: Both providers would remove leaves and small sticks from the front and back lawn, two garden beds and the patio, including haul-away. A prices only that cleanup. B also includes fresh mulch and dethatching. If you only want cleanup, ask B for a revised written total without those extras. If you want mulch too, ask A to price it separately. Before approving dethatching, ask why it is needed and whether the timing is appropriate.
Example request: “Please quote a one-time spring cleanup of the front and back lawn, about [area], two garden beds and the patio. Remove leaves and small sticks, and haul the collected debris away. List mulch, pruning and mowing separately. My preferred window is [dates]. Please confirm when you can schedule the work and how weather delays are handled.”
Photos can show the areas and debris to remove. Keep house numbers, documents, contact details and access codes out of public descriptions and photos. Confirm the actual service date with the provider before making plans around it.
Before you choose
- Both proposals cover the same lawn, beds and paved areas.
- The disposal method and any hauling fees are explicit.
- Optional materials and treatments have separate prices.
- For hourly work, I know crew size, estimated time, minimum and extra-time approval.
Compare your own quotes
Use the amounts in your quotes for the same work and number of visits. Enter 0 only when the provider confirms there is no extra charge or discount. Leave unknown amounts blank. This worksheet adds your figures; it does not estimate a market price.
No account needed. Entries are not submitted or saved by this worksheet. Copy or print them before leaving. Keep names, addresses and contact details out of your notes.
If a provider quotes per visit or per hour, calculate the total for the same number of visits or estimated hours before entering it. For a seasonal plan, enter the seasonal fee once. If the number of visits is uncertain, compare separate scenarios, such as 10 visits and 15 visits. Add only charges not already included in the quoted total.
Check the exclusions, timing and provider's terms as well as the total. A lower number does not show that two quotes cover the same work.
