Compare driveway snow removal quotes

Your driveway is clear. Then the street plow leaves a ridge across the entrance. Does your quote cover a return trip?

The short answer

Ask each provider to price the same areas and say how much snow must fall before they come. Some providers call a clearing visit a push. On a per-visit plan, a second trip can add a second charge during the same storm. If the quote covers a whole storm, ask how the provider defines a storm and which return visits are included. For a seasonal quote, confirm the dates, what's included and what could change the total.

List the areas you want cleared

Give the approximate driveway dimensions, surface and slope. Say where cars usually park and where there is room to pile snow. List the front walk, steps and public sidewalk separately so each provider prices the same areas.

If your property has a public sidewalk in Minneapolis, check the city's clearing rules and ask whether the provider's service window fits the applicable deadline. Make a plan for clearing the sidewalk if too little snow falls for the crew to come.

Confirm when the crew comes and how you’re charged

Ask how much snow triggers a visit and whether the crew comes automatically. Get the expected service window in writing, especially if you need to leave early or have a sidewalk to clear.

Per push or visit

Ask what one visit costs and whether the rate changes for deeper snow. Find out what you would pay if the crew came twice in the same storm.

If the quote covers a whole storm

Ask how the provider defines a storm and whether the price covers a second pass during that storm.

Seasonal

Write down the start and end dates, any visit or snowfall limits, and what could change the seasonal price. Check whether sidewalk clearing and de-icing cost extra.

Compare the offers in three scenarios

Use the same snowfall amounts for both quotes, including how much falls before each visit. Ask whether extra charges for deeper snow are based on the amount cleared each visit or the total for the storm.

For each situation, write down the total you would pay on a per-push or per-storm plan. For a seasonal plan, write the season price separately and note any charge on top of it. Ask about any price the quote leaves unclear.

One clearing

The crew comes once after the snowfall reaches the plan’s minimum. Does that visit cover the driveway, front walk, steps and sidewalk you listed?

Two passes in one storm

Say 2 inches fall before the first visit and 3 more before the second. What would you pay in total for those two visits?

Street plow ridge

The city plow leaves a ridge after the driveway is clear. Will the crew return automatically, and does that visit cost extra?

What to put in a snow removal request

Fill in your details and delete any areas you do not need cleared. “I’m looking for [one-time clearing or ongoing winter service] for a [length and width] [surface] driveway, plus [walks, steps or sidewalk]. Cars usually park [where]. Please explain when you come, whether repeat visits and street plow ridge clearing are included, and what de-icing or other extras cost.”

Leave your exact address and contact details out of the public description. If you add a photo, keep house numbers, people and license plates out of the frame.

Before you choose

  • Each quote covers the same surfaces.
  • The trigger and timing are written down.
  • Return trips and ice treatment are priced or marked as excluded.
  • Snow storage and vehicle access are clear.
