How to Compare Interior Painting Quotes
A quote to paint the bedroom walls is not the same as a quote for the walls, ceiling and doors. Start by marking the surfaces you want painted, then compare preparation and finish details.

The short answer
Compare the same rooms, surfaces, preparation and finish coats. For labor-only work, add the paint, primer, supplies and other charges you must pay separately. Confirm whether any area-based price uses floor area or painted surface area, then ask for a written total for the same work.
Use one room-and-surface list for both painters
Twin Cities Resurfacing’s comparison guide asks homeowners to identify the surfaces, preparation, products and customer responsibilities in the estimate. Make those decisions concrete with a short room list.
Illustrative scope only. Add your own rooms and condition photos; this is not a standard painting package.
| Example area | What to put in your request |
|---|---|
| Bedroom walls | Paint; describe nail holes and visible damage |
| Bedroom ceiling | Include or exclude explicitly |
| Doors and trim | Name which doors, sides, frames and baseboards |
| Closet | State whether the interior is included |
| Preparation and protection | Specify repairs; agree who moves and protects furniture |
How to compare painting labor costs
A labor-only quote can leave you buying more than the finish paint. Ask who supplies primer, patching materials, masking and other job supplies, and who pays for pickup or delivery. Add the separately purchased items to the labor quote before comparing it with a paint-included total.
For hourly work, confirm whether the rate is per painter or for the crew, the expected hours and any minimum. For a fixed price, confirm the exact work it covers. Ask when the painter will seek your approval if repairs or additional coats change that price.
Homewyse’s room-painting calculator separates labor, paint and job supplies. Its labor description includes preparation, protection, setup and cleanup as well as painting. Its estimate is an illustrative starting point, not a quote for your home.
Use confirmed amounts from the painter and your supplier. Leave an unknown cost marked “not stated”; do not treat it as zero. Supplying your own paint does not establish that the two offers cover the same work.
| Cost or responsibility | Labor-only offer | Paint-included offer |
|---|---|---|
| Painter’s work | Which preparation, surfaces and coats are included? | Does the price cover the same work? |
| Paint and primer | Product, quantity and purchase cost you must add | Product and quantity included; cost of any extra paint |
| Job supplies and collection | Who pays for supplies, pickup or delivery? | What is included, and what remains extra? |
| Comparison total | Labor quote plus every separately payable item | Quoted total plus any excluded items you still need |
Floor area and painted wall area are different
Before comparing a price per square foot, ask which area the painter measured. Homewyse’s room calculator labels its input as floor area. A wall measurement uses the wall lengths and heights instead. The two quantities are not interchangeable.
Worked measurement example: a rectangular room 12 feet long and 12 feet wide has 144 square feet of floor area. With four 8-foot-high walls, its gross wall area is 48 feet of perimeter × 8 feet = 384 square feet, before allowing for doors or windows. The ceiling adds another 144 square feet if it is part of the job.
Ask each painter to confirm the measured area, how openings are handled and whether ceilings, trim and doors are priced separately. Confirm the number of coats in the quoted scope. These example dimensions illustrate the measurement difference; they do not estimate your labor hours, paint quantity or price.
“Premium paint” still needs a product name
Ask for the manufacturer, product line and sheen, along with where primer is proposed and how many finish coats are included. The 360 Painting Dayton comparison guide highlights these distinctions. Its local market claims are not Minnesota pricing evidence.
An online paint calculator estimates product quantity, not the complete cost of preparing and painting your rooms. Sherwin-Williams says its calculation is approximate and depends on application and surface condition. Ask the painter to confirm quantities and the work needed for your surfaces.
Worked example: ask for the missing ceiling price
Illustrative scope example: A quotes walls and baseboards in two bedrooms. B quotes those surfaces plus both ceilings. You want ceilings painted, so ask A to add them. Then check whether both revisions include the same repairs, products and finish coats. The higher original total does not prove better value.
For a pre-1978 home, EPA recommends using a lead-safe certified contractor for renovation, repair or painting projects. Tell the painter the home’s age and ask how any disturbance of older paint will be handled. Do not treat ordinary preparation wording as confirmation of lead-safe work.
Before agreeing, get the payment schedule, planned work dates, cleanup, touch-up process and written approval process for added repairs. Send detailed access arrangements privately.
Copy a request for the rooms you want painted
Example request: “Please quote the walls, ceilings and baseboards in two bedrooms. There are small nail holes to repair. State the preparation, primer, finish coats and paint product line and sheen. Include protection and cleanup, and tell me who moves the furniture. Price any added repairs separately before starting.”
Adapt the room list and visible condition to your home. Share its approximate age and useful room photos, but keep people, personal documents and access codes out of public photos or notes. Send exact addresses and entry arrangements privately.
Before you choose
- Both quotes name the same rooms and surfaces.
- Labor-only and paint-included offers include the same separately payable items.
- Any price per square foot uses a clearly stated measurement.
- Repairs, primer, finish coats and product lines are stated.
- Furniture moving, protection and cleanup responsibilities are clear.
- I have checked relevant credentials and how extra work or missed areas are handled.
Compare your own quotes
Use the amounts in your quotes for the same work and number of visits. Enter 0 only when the provider confirms there is no extra charge or discount. Leave unknown amounts blank. This worksheet adds your figures; it does not estimate a market price.
No account needed. Entries are not submitted or saved by this worksheet. Copy or print them before leaving. Keep names, addresses and contact details out of your notes.
If a provider quotes per visit or per hour, calculate the total for the same number of visits or estimated hours before entering it. For a seasonal plan, enter the seasonal fee once. If the number of visits is uncertain, compare separate scenarios, such as 10 visits and 15 visits. Add only charges not already included in the quoted total.
Check the exclusions, timing and provider's terms as well as the total. A lower number does not show that two quotes cover the same work.
